Lily Allport's Profile
A Little about Me
I'm taking a year off work and trying to find something better to do with my life. I've been really keen on the idea of building my own sustainable house, but fancy trying out a few projects and getting some experience together before I take the plunge fully. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty and am really keen to learn. I've done a basic cob course and now know how to make cob and how to build a cob oven! I've also researched other sustainable build materials and have a basic knowledge of some (e.g. rammed earth). I'm currently in France working at an old wine maker's house which is now a B&B. The couple I'm volunteering with/for are going to be building a straw bale house and I'm learning from them.
Why I Build Sustainably
I guess for most of the usual reasons. Mainly because it's a winner for everyone - cheap to build, cheap to run, encourages people to think about resources, helps to connect people with the land that sustains them. I'm not a hardcore eco-warrior, but I like my food to be local and organic, my energy use to be low, my cleaning and toiletry products to be non-toxic, that kind of thing
Skills I would like to Work on or Share.
I can cook reasonably well, not too shabby with a paint brush, can wield an electric drill, recently passed my driving test, generally pretty resourceful. Very keen to learn some more practical skills - I've never been very good with a saw, but would like to rectify that if anybody can teach me.
My Life Philosophy
As far as possible, do what you love to do, most other stuff is a waste of your precious life. Treat people with respect. Have fun and don't take yourself too seriously... That kind of thing.
Building Styles I have Experience in
just the short course I went on, mentioned earlier.
My Building Qualifications
None, but a little experience in light renovation and painting and decorating.
Loads of experience working in offices - in internal communications, which involves a lot of writing and information dissemination as well as events and campaigns for employees. So, I've got a pretty good head on me and can happily try to help out with admin, marketing and that kind of thing.
Building Styles I'm Interested in
Local Materials (ie Sustainable Wood)
They're just the ones that appeal most I guess. I've seen a rammed earth project and think that the finished article is beautiful looking. I like the organic shapes you can create with cob. The ease of building with straw bales appeals, reclaimed materials are almost always interesting and force you to think creatively. I'd like to understand how to work with wood.
Have A-levels and GCSEs. In the middle of doing an Open University degree in English - currently doing a module in creative writing.
My Eating Habits
I'm mostly vegetarian, but occasionally eat fish, so not a real one. Eat most stuff that isn't meat. Like cheese, salads, stews, veg, cakes etc - can make all of these things too!
