Mostly this will be on small structures like composting toilets, nurseries, trellises and containers for gardens, earthen kitchen, benches… the nice part is that there will always be building that both beginners and more experienced people can do, and also ranging from repetitive physical labor to fine details and finishing touches.

Spending a weekend cobbing with Graeme and Nherla was a real adventure. This is no hobby project: this is their home, full-time. Shared by two delightful young children, four rambunctious but frlendly dogs, some puppies, plus sundry pigs, goats, sheep, peacocks, chickens, turkeys, and a pony. Also, a rotating stable of Pooshers, backpackers getting their rural work stamp for their working holiday visa, and other helpers. The homestead has all kinds of projects going on simultaneously: the nearly-complete cob house, an entrance gate and surrounding wall, a garden and outdoor kitchen area, and more, all of cob plus recycled/scavenged materials such as glass computer-desk tops (for windows). There is a dam to swim in (muddy but cool and refreshing); a cob and timber composting toilet; a rammed-earth and tire picnic area. We worked about 6 hours a day, nourished by Nherla's plentiful cooking, and slept in caravans (small, old, but clean and comfortable)--cob guest rooms are on their way.
It's a longish drive from Brisbane, and it got VERY hot. But I'll be back.

Hey Michael, on Graeme's profile page there is a "Leave a Reference" button. This comment seems like it would go well there!

this is pretty much exactly the type of project we are hoping to start on late next year.  We would love to come help out for a couple weeks, most likely in September.  We have no experience but would love to gain some, and very willing hands

Hi Graeme,

My partner and I live on the Sunshine Coast and are really interested in learning more about sustainable building and permaculture and just generally lending a hand wherever we can be useful while learning some new stuff! We've got some travel plans in the upcoming months but if we can work something out to come down for a week or so at a time whenever we are around we would love to get involved. Happy to help with any jobs that need doing!

Feel free to send me an email at weinerhayley@gmail.com

Thanks!

Hayley
